Our Deepest Fear...

This selection has been cited countless times over the years and may not be new to some of you readers, but it's something that I always come back to during times like these. It is often mistakenly credited to Nelson Mandela as he quoted it in one of his famous speeches, but it actually belongs to Marianne Williamson from her book Return to Love. From all of us here at ANP Quarterly, here's wishing you all a 2008 full of inspiration and success.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate,
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness,
that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, whom am I
to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually,
who are we not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about
shrinking so that other people won’t
feel insecure around you.
You were born to make manifest
the glory of God.
That is within us.
It’s not just some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our light shine,
we unconsciously
give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

Harmony and Marc Jacobs

For all you pop-culture junkies that NEED to know what's happening before it's happening here's a sneak preview of the new Marc Jacobs campaign featuring our current cover boy Harmony Korine.

Ummmm.......

So I feel bad that there's been nothing new on this blog for so long, so here's something to read over the holidays.

no way

I mean, not to talk dirty on anything to do with apple, as I type on my beloved 3 year old-but-still-rocking iBook G4, but wouldn't the ultimate holiday gift be to cure a disease, or to end this war... or even a lexus?

Cinefamily!!

I've been over at the Family Bookstore a couple of times over the last few days and today as I was driving home I remembered this really cool thing they're doing at the moment. Basically, the folks at Family have taken over some of the programming at the Silent Movie Theatre on Fairfax and filled it up with a wonderful assortment of strange, esoteric films. hence, CINEFAMILY. Here's what the official description of the project states:

The Cinefamily is an organization of movie lovers devoted to finding and presenting interesting and unusual programs of exceptional, distinctive, weird and wonderful films. The Cinefamily’s goal is to foster a spirit of community and a sense of discovery, while reinvigorating the movie-going experience. Like campfires, sporting events and church services, we believe that movies work best as social experiences. They are more meaningful, funnier and scarier when shared with others. Our home is the Silent Movie Theatre, one of Hollywood’s most beloved and beautiful cultural landmarks. There, The Cinefamily will provide a destination spot for Los Angelenos and others to rediscover the pleasures of cinema.

Built in 1942 by John and Dorothy Hampton, The Silent Movie Theatre ran for decades as the only fully functioning silent movie theatre in the country. It has been fully restored to its original, vintage 1940s art deco design, along with a brand new screen and sound system, to help a new generation enjoy the pleasures of cinema in a beautiful theatre.

If you live in LA, or just happen to be traveling through in search of cinematic curiosities, we suggest you check them out. Click HERE for schedules and showtimes.

……And the above text touches on a very interesting fact, which is that the new issue of ANPQ is done, but not really out yet… It has been shipped to individual subscribers, and we gave out 1000 copies in Miami last week during the big art trip-out, but we are going to wait until January 1 to ship it to our regular accounts. So that means “if you live in Portland, wait until January 5th before you start asking the people at Jack Pot Records for it every day,” or the equivalent. We super appreciate anyone wanting the thing, but unfortunately we are experiencing some internal human shuffling, so shipping has to pause… sorry everyone! But the new issue will be around everywhere it usually is and some new places so so soon!

And go to OogaBooga tomorrow if you are in LA!

clock

So, I was just about to post about the ooga booga party tomorrow, and thought, wait, I should fully break up our stream of constant event plugging with something that is not so time/place sensitive... well, this is maybe more time sensitive, but in a different way (fuck, was that even a pun? I think it was too dumb to even be a pun... read on, please)
If you're like me, you have spent years looking for the perfect alarm clock... I have pretty intense anxiety disorder stuff that revolves around a fear that the alarm won't go off in the morning, and I will miss whatever it is that I have first on the agenda... WELL, this is, I think, maybe the best alarm clock ever made. It is made by Sony, and I think it is called the "Dream Machine." It costs $19 at Best Buy, has an internal automatic time setting function (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) so when you plug it in it immediately sets itself to the local time, it is pretty small, it has two pretty close to fool proof alarms (so you and your partner can wake at separate times) and the speakers are very un-piercing.

Best clock ever.
And, since it is so cheap ($19!), if you are prone to breaking stuff, it is not the biggest deal in the world to replace... but that's still a waste of plastic... so... uhm...
Best clock ever!

Ivory Serra Book Signing

Ivory Serra will be signing his book "The Serra Effect" this Thursday night at 7:00 at BOOK SOUP in Hollywood.

Peter Beard calls The Serra Effect "Absolutely classic America authentica--pure Ivory."
Ivory Serra's intoxicating insider photographs have appeared in Rolling Stone, Newsweek, Time and XXL, and in the books Hip Hop Immortals and the bestselling Beautiful Losers. He was the in-house photographer for the legendary New York gallery Alleged, over its last six years in the 1990s, documenting art and artists both, and his work there was published in the book Young, Sleek and Full of Hell, with accompanying shows in New York and Paris. This newest volume offers a tracking shot of the characters and neo-pop idols upon whom Serra's gaze has rested over his years with a camera, all captured in their natural environments. They include: Lenny Kravitz, Bam Margera, Terry Richardson, Mark Gonzales, Harmony Korine, Chloe Sevigny, Nelly, Tyra Banks, Azzedine Alaia, Tony Alva, Tony Hawk, Phil Frost, Tom Sachs, the Wu Tang Clan and Avril Lavigne.

ANP Quarterly infects Miami Florida

Our booth at the NADA art fair is going off. Take a sledge hammer and bust open a crate of ANP's...

Spreading the info to flocks of art sheep who come to learn from the wise sage that is Brendan.

Ethan and Brendan, Car Clutch, getting ready for the ANP/Nada party later that evening.

Earlier in the week, Brendan and Ed did a live radio spot on PS1's radio station thing down on the beach. We spoke of ANP and each others "stuff" that is going on.

Then the ANP/Nada (with Nike money) party happened, and it was fun talking to all the homies. Aaron was there of course since he organized it, but was too busy being hassled by people to get a shot of him.

Art Basel Miami news from the frontlines...

The front lines of art-commerce.

Pettibon at the Regan Projects booth...

A great Keith Haring at Deitch Projects...

Another giant Haring painting at some booth I forgot the name of.

There was plenty of Basquiat paintings there. I heard one person ask the price of one medium sized one. It was going for 2.5 million dollars.

An ATM was available for your art purchases, and some lady left here baby there. (except this was also "art")

This is a sculpture believe it or not... fucking crazy.

Some random installation at the Roberts and Tilton booth.

Jo Jackson lost her shoes at the Iggy Pop concert.

The painted lady who performed at the Deitch party. see My Blog for more photos.

Cheryl Dunn and Jo Jackson enjoy the good life.

Marsea Goldberg and her hot emerging young artist Deanna Templeton
